LEG VEINS • • • treated with Laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) therapy

Imagine legs free of unsightly veins. Until now, treatment of small varicose veins and spider/thread veins involved needles or other invasive procedures. Now, using laser and Intense Pulsed Light, unsightly leg veins can be treated simply and non-invasively.

What type of leg veins can be treated?
Varicose veins, usually the deeper blue veins, need different treatment from the more superficial discoloured clusters known as spider or thread veins. For this reason the doctor will make an individual assessment on which type of treatment would be most effective and may involve a combination of two treatments. On occasion sclerotherapy, or injection of the veins, may be used, but this will depend on the clinical assessment, and patient preference.

Deeper blue veins
Some varicose veins, usually the deeper, thicker, blue veins are treated with laser. These veins respond to the precise energy level and wavelength of light that is used. The small spot of laser light travels through the skin and is absorbed by blood within the vein. The heat from this coagulates the blood and destroys the structure of the vein; the vein is then absorbed by the body over time and will disappear.

Surface and spider veins

For these smaller superficial structures we use Intense Pulsed Light. This is a less aggressive therapy more suited to the smaller, superficial vessels. The pulses of light act in a similar way, heating the blood in the vessels and dispersing them.

How many treatments are needed?

Most leg veins will require a number of treatments over several months. The doctor will advise you at your initial appointment.

What is the treatment like?
A pulse of laser or Intense Pulsed Light may feel like a pinch similar to a snapped rubber band. The skin is cooled with chilled gel and other techniques to prevent discomfort. The entire procedure is very brief and is non-invasive; no needles are used at any time.

What preparations should I take?
The treatment should not be performed on tanned skin, so prior to and following treatment you must limit your exposure to the sun. We advise you use full sun protection for a month following treatment. You should also avoid vigorous exercise for 1 to 2 days after treatment.
