Using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) therapy

At the Cotswold Medical Aesthetic clinic we use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) to remove unwanted hair from any site on the body. This is medically proven to be the most successful method of removing hair.

How it works

Tightly controlled flashes of light are selectively absorbed by hair and the hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the hair, which damages or destroys the re-growth potential of the follicle without damaging any of the surrounding tissue.

Follicles that are actively growing at the time of treatment can be completely destroyed, however dormant follicles will require further treatment.

On average, eight treatment sessions at six to eight weekly intervals will permanently reduce hair growth by around 80%.

What happens during treatment

It begins by trimming away the hair above the skin. You will be asked to wear eye prorection to protect your eyes from the light. Next a cold gel is spread over the treatment area and the treatment begins. Each pulse of light feels like a slight sting or pinch not unlike the snap of an elastic band. No local anaesthesia is required and most people tolerate the treatment well. A proportion of the hair is removed during the treatment, with the remaining hair coming away in the next week or two.

Are there any possible side effects?

Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening of the skin, or some slight swelling but this usually goes away within a few hours. On very rare occasions some localised blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly. The skin may also become darker or lighter following treatment but will generally return to normal within a few weeks.

Following the treatment you can return to work and resume all regular activities immediately. Imagine not having to shave, wax, pluck or go through electrolysis again.

Intense Pulsed Light offers a gentle, non-invasive, long lasting solution to bikini line or any other body area. Based on a technology used for nearly a decade in the treatment of port-wine stains and other birthmarks, IPL photo-epilation has been performed safely for years.

Advantages over laser

IPL is customised to each client's requirements. Computer technology selects the most appropriate wavelength and pulse characteristics to treat a variety of hair and skin colours. Laser, however, can only use one wavelength of light and therefore can only treat a small minority of hair and skin types with moderate success.
