| What is 'Botox'? |
Botox is a treatment for improving wrinkles
and laughter lines in the upper face. These lines
are caused by prolonged or excessive contraction of the facial muscles.
Botox is a specially formulated solution which when injected into
muscle causes a temporary muscular relaxation. This produces a decrease
and sometimes complete disappearance of the lines in the upper face.
Botox is best used on 'frown lines', 'worry lines' and 'laughter lines'.
|
| What does the treatment involve? |
| The treatment involves a
small number of injections into specific facial muscles which cause
the wrinkling.

|
|
|
The injections
themselves use a very fine needle and most people experience very
little discomfort. The full effect develops over the following 2-14
days.
After 3-6 months, depending on the individual, the Botox effect will
fade and the muscle action will return. When the wrinkles start to
reappear a simple repeat treatment is all that is required to maintain
the effect.
|
| Are there any side effects
of the treatment? |
The only side effects are related to the local
injection of the solution: there may be slight discomfort from the
needle itself and occasionally bruising may appear at the injection
site. Rarely a temporary drooping of the upper eyelid occurs which
resolves within a few weeks. No permanent side effects have been reported
with Botox use. |
| What happens after the treatment? |
| We ask that you don't lie down for
3 - 4 hours after the treatment and that you attempt to use the muscles
in that area. It is best not to massage the skin, to prevent the Botox
spreading amongst other muscle groups. Makeup can be reapplied after
the injections. |
